I would argue that we don't, and sometimes it's better to let a series exist with only one or a few installments rather than run it into the ground. And Call of Duty is its own category entirely, with too many reinventions to count. Examples of this can be up for debate, but I'd say the leap from Halo 3 to Halo Reach set that series back, and the same with Assasin's Creed 3 over Assassin's Creed 2. That's why I can safely declare that games like Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Effect 2 and even Dead Space 2 were dramatically better than their predecessors.īut at a certain point, the "improvements" start to make the game worse much of the time. Sequels often take the great promise of their original games and improve upon them in ways that don't feel forced. ![]()
